General George Smith Patton Jr.
One of the most famous and legendary generals of the allies in World War 2, is Patton. He led American armored troops and was one of the leaders of the liberation of Europe.
General Patton was born the 11th of November 1885 in San Gabriel, Los Angeles, California. He was called ”Old Blood and Guts”, ”Bandito” or ”The Old Man”.
He grew up in a wealthy family and they had a military background.
In Patton´s youth, he struggled with writing and reading, but he turned out to be a very intelligent boy.
One thing that is not so famous is that he actually visited Sweden twice.
The first time was in 1912, when he took part in the Olympics in Stockholm.
He participated in a pentathlon, which included fencing, shooting and off-road riding.
In the shooting part, a mistake” happened. Patton thought that you should use a military weapon, so he used a revolver with heavier ammunition.
His ammunition tore the target´s middle into pieces so the judges couldn´t tell if all the shots had hit. The judges called it a ”miss”, even though the rest of the people could see that all the shots had hit the middle.
He ended up on 27th place in shooting and 4th place altogether. If the so called mistake didn´t happened, Patton would have been a gold medalist.
George S. Patton liked horses very much and he is famous for his efforts to save the Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.
Also he competed in horse jumping and as a polo player.
After the peace in 1945, Patton accidentally ended up in a conflict with the political leadership of USA. His role as a commander was taken away, but he was honored by the people as a great hero and a liberator.
After World War 2, the Swedish government invited general Eisenhower, but he was busy so they suggested that general Patton would represent him during a visit in Sweden.
Patton visited Sweden in November 1945 and the army chief general Archibald Douglas invited him to dinner on Djurgården.
